How many of you dear readers have ever wanted more power? More speed? Or more economy out of your car? How many times do you hear someone saying they want to remap their car for more power. It’s normally the first modification anyone thinks about.
The reason it’s so popular is because it’s extremely affordable, readily available everywhere for a good chunk of models out there and it can make a huge difference to your car.
Most people might not know this but cars out of the factory aren’t tuned to their full potential. They are usually left with a bit of room to play with so to speak. This means the ECU can be played with a little bit and change the timings of things like the air and fuel mix.
The reasons everyone wants a remap are because they want more performance and economy out of their cars. Both are achievable through this very quick and simple mod.
Can You Remap Any Car?
Most modern cars can be remapped, some of them might be a little trickier and not have as many places you can map. This is because the remaps work best on turbocharged and supercharged engines. Anything with an N/A Engine isn’t really going to get the full benefit.
Although N/A cars can be remapped and performance can be extracted, for the sake of saving you money, it wouldn’t be advised, but it shouldn’t stop you from looking around because it does vary from engine to engine.

Although there are some fantastic benefits to remapping, there are some things to take into account before you start throwing your cash around. Be aware of the following
- Insurance prices may rise
- Risk of speeding
- Some remaps may void warranty (if you have any)
- Going cheap is not a good choice
- You WILL want to use your right foot more
Just be sensible with your choice of remap and how you drive, just because you’ve got an extra 50 horses doesn’t mean you gotta gallop with them all, take it steady, have fun and stay out of trouble.
What Options For Remapping?
It’s not all just go to a local performance garage and get a remap. Do your homework, there are loads of garages that offer remaps, some might be cheaper, some might be closer to you. I’ve known people drive 100’s of miles to get to a good performance garage.
If you cheap out, you cheap yourself. Find out where everyone recommends taking your model, then take a journey to the best places, it’ll pay off. You’ll know when you’ve got a bad map.
On the other side of the coin, some places might offer a flash map that they can post out to you if their work. This is just plug in, home remap with your laptop and your away in a few hours, just make sure to make time for it, like on a day off.
