Slammed cars are a love hate thing There are people out there that absolutely hate them and think they are pointless, then there are people that will do anything to slam their pride and joy to the ground. So those people that want to slam it, have you ever wondered what it would be like daily driving a lowered car?
There is a lot more to think about when you’re driving a lowered car then just chucking some coilovers on it, getting some mad offset wheels and going out for a drive, especially in the UK with the state of some of our roads.

All car guys come across problems with their projects, daily cars or any car to be honest. There’s always something that breaks or needs fixing for no reason what so ever. But for those that want a lowered car there are more complications than people think, making these cars totally impractical.
So why do we do it?
Why not? It’s fun and looks cool. Don’t care, that’s how it is. It might seem impractical to some but it’s fun for the rest of us. The problems we might get from lowering our cars include
- Pot holes
- Front splitters and rear diffusers
- Getting beached on a slight bump
- Exhaust scrub
- Wheel arch rub
- Bottoming Out
Yup, that’s probably the least of your problems, there’s also weather to take into consideration and other obstacles ready to damage all the hard work you put into your car, but if you make it to work without losing something off your car, you’re doing alright.
Obviously there’s 2 types of people in the Slammed car game, those that go static and those that bag. Absolutely nothing wrong with either, they have their places in the scene and each to their own.
Those budget slammers might prefer to go coilovers and the ones with a bit of dosh might go bags. Either way the aim of the game is to get your car low.
Going static (or coilovers) with your car always presents more challenges as you don’t have the option to add more air into your suspension and raise it off the ground a little more. It is literally, you got a low car, deal with it. I applaud these guys as they know how to drive a low car, it’s not easy and takes skill.
Going bagged on the other hand is easier, you can raise your suspension, glide over the road, not stressing about the things to come because you know you have the ability to alter your ride height at the touch of a button. Although bags still come with problems it’s a little less stressful and takes the edge off.
Whichever you decide to go with, you’re going to encounter some problem, your cars lower than stock, it’s just how it is, it’s how you deal with it.
Planning Your Route
OK, first things first, wherever you’re going, whether it’s the shops or your commute to work, you gotta think more ahead than you normally would. You’ve got to think of all existing obstacles that might get in your way.
- Speed bumps
- Pot holes or road surface
- Getting off your drive
All these things will test you, but if you know a good way around most of them you’ll be alright. It’s when you are going somewhere new that will raise your anxiety. Like trying to get on a ramp to a ferry, yep, been there, anxiety central. But if you know you’ve got an obstacle, it’s half the battle.
Tips For Daily Driving Lowered
There’s not really any crazy tips to save you ripping a bumper off. If you’ve slammed your car, you’ll probably do some damage at some point, it’s just lowering your chances.
Most problems you will get is speed bumps or beaching. To get over these problems, first try to avoid them if you know they are there, pick another route and call it scenic. Second assess to see if it’s too big. Third, if you have to go over it and it’s not too big, hit it at an angle and keep your wheels straight.
Parking and curbs can be a nightmare, especially if you used to let your rear bumper hang over the edge a little on the back of a car park space. You’re going to have to stop sooner, otherwise that rear diffuser is going to be in your boot.
Another point here is parking isn’t easy as it is, there’s not always a space, so sometimes you may be required to park on road side, where you can’t always drop curb it. You just gotta get close and hug the curb the best you can without damaging the rims. Take your time.
Some parking is off-road, like farms and fields, avoid these. It’s not worth it. Find another way.
Pot holes are a tricky one. They make you take a test to see if your cars road worthy but they don’t do tests to see if the road is car worthy. Unfortunately, there are problems with the state of our roads. All we gotta do is pay more attention to the road surface as we are driving and try to dodge them the best we can.
Driveways are driveways. If you built it on your drive, you gotta know how to get it off. If you have to custom build ramps then that’s what you gotta do. Lowered cars are a pain to get off of most drives, but if you do it every day, it’ll get easier.
Sometimes, you just gotta send it, you might not like it, but it’s the only way to save you getting beached. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. Remember everything can be fixed.
